Our Genre

As a group we have decided that the genre we are going to do as our video is UK Grime. We have looked at many different videos that relate to this and many famous artists that this genre relates to. For example we looked at videos from tinie tempah including pass out, frisky and miami to ibiza. In miami to ibiza, tinie tempah collaborates with the swedish house mafia which are a drum n bass band. Here are some images from this video. In our video we will use similar images to this as it will suit our genre of UK Grime.
In these photo's tinie tempah (the artist) is a stereotype of a typical grime artist. This is due to his clothes. For example he is wearing sunglasses and black leather jackets. This is what we will be using in our music videos. This does not just show the clothes that i want our artist to wear but also shows the poses and the cheeky 'swaggerness' we want our artist to have.

2 videos for homework

The first video that i enjoyed watching was the video from Cee Lo Green - Fuck You. The main reason why i enjoyed watching this is because of the visuals in the video with the narrative. At first we see a young boy singing the song and it seemed to be as we got to a new verse he grew older until he grew to a man. I found this kind of funny when the little boy is lipsyncing the video as he is swearing and pulling funny faces.

The second thing i like about this video is how the lipsyncing is on time all through out the video. Also, the video matches the genre and rythem of the song. The video is set in a olden day setting and the costumes match everything about how the music is. The music is a bit funky and hip hop and everything in the video matches it.
The other video that i like was Erykah Badu Window Seat. This music video was actually kind of boring but i liked it because how basic it was. All through out the video all we see is a woman walking down a road taking different items of clothing off and now and then running.

The reason why i liked this is because it could be something that I could look at doing when i do my music video as it does not look like it was complexed it was just a easy, simple but effective idea.

Innotative and Contempory Videos

Chromeo - Turn the lights on
  • A lot of close ups and midlength shots
  • Tacking shots
  • Lipsyncing
  • Various Locations
  • The shots change in line with the beat
  • They are wearing smart casual clothing
  • Long shots of the band
  • They cut out the lights and only show the eyes
  • The artists in the video are contempory because they are wearing sunglasses which is on modern music videos
  • Only see the eyes when the lights are turnt off. This is playing with the song as people say you can see the light in someones eye
  • Non linear equipment

Charlotte Gainsbourg & Beck 'Heaven Can Wait'

  • Having a massive robot walking her down the stairs
  • Weird people in masks does not match the genre of the music
  • The video was not boring, it included people wearing melons on their head
  • Lipsyncing
  • Close ups of Charlotte Gainsbourg & Beck
  • Convention of video showing person playing the instrument

Jamie Lidell (Timothy Saccenti)

  • Showing a woman with no mouth
  • Lipsyncing
  • Video mainly on the actor performing
  • All the time there is two people in all black costumes with a white mask dancing around the performer
  • White cubes where in every shot

M.I.A - Jimmy

  • Bright colours
  • Sounds like a funky retro song
  • The pictures in the background go with the music as it has flashing lights with little figures of people dancing
  • Close ups
  • Change of costumes

Giggs Video Analysis

Giggz – Look What The Cat Dragged In; Grime.

There isn’t much performance in this video, which is typical of a Grime video, for the majority of the video we see Giggz standing in the same position, occasionally he will dance but not for long. We see lots of women in the video, which is also seen a lot in Grime videos, we see the women dancing for the majority of the video or we see the women around Giggz himself.

We see a lot of pointing towards the audience and making eye contact from Giggz, he points towards the audience and also himself almost as if to say; im the one you should be looking at.

So looking at a very typical Grime video; we see that Grime videos tend to not have a lot of performance in them from the artist themselves but the people around the artist use a lot of performance.

The artist themselves tend to stand in one position for the majority of the music video trying their best to look cool around there group of friends.

Reggae Genre Mood Board Analysis:

When creating my mood board I discovered that there is a main way, which the music genre of reggae is presented. I have included mainstream artists who have made it big in this music genre and these people are:
==> Buju Banton
==> Damien Marley
==> Bob Marley
==> Gyptain
==> Elephant Man
==> Sean Paul
==> Capleton

As you can see in my mood board, this music genre represents itself in a proud way as the artist are proud to dress in a way that represents themselves as a person and also where they come from. The reggae genre is known for the Rastafarian hairstyle with the big rust hats and also the smoking of the ganja.

The colours that they wear as well are fairly bright, as they like to stand out, for example Elephant Man’s album cover is he on a flashy bike with a red leather jacket on and black sunglasses. All of the stuff that he is wearing represents money and power.

The reggae genre also gets its name for the accents they use. The main language that they use is Patois, which is the Jamaican language, which is very fast and hard to understand if you are not familiar with it

In the music videos that are made for these types of music songs, they are normally set where they come from. They are normally set in the reggae backgrounds where it is normally from like in Jamaica but a song like Bob Marley – One Love is set in England in a multi social environment with lots of different cultures and also different types of people from different music genres i.e. Goths and Paul McCartney. By this it is aimed at a large target audience and attracts lots of people.

The colours that dominate this music genre is the national colours of the countries that reggae music generates from. The Rastafarian hat colours of red, green and yellow symbolize the patriotic faith that they have and they also have the colours of the Ethiopian and Jamaican flags.

Low-Fi Music Videos

Figrig invented by Mike Figgis, is designed as a cheaper version of a steady cam and it can be used really easy to track shots and move around with it, crain, crab.

Lighting:

  • Use torches

  • The sun

  • Reflectors by using white sheets

  • Cling foil

Mise-en-scene:

  • Go out and find locations to film
  • Green screen
  • Layer different locations on top of them and then speed things up behind them

Slow motion - Create effect were performer is moving slowly but the lipsyncing is still on time. You will need a sped up back track for this.

One low budget music video that I analyzed was from an up and coming music group called 'The Unit'. In there video the main location that they used was in a studio in front a plain white background. Even though this seemed low budget, the way that they used and set them selves on the set looked good. When they done their solo's, the camera would have lots of close up shots of them standing in front of a white background. When they are as a group doing the chorus we see them all together in front of a green background. In some shots they also have still shots which cut in between each other.

Another technique that they used well when doing their video was putting their music video on top of the facebook background and this worked well because their song was called 'Facebook'. Also, they use simple effect like putting mist into the video and cuts which zoom in and zoom out. The transitions that they use to go from one shot to another differ as well by including fade outs or swirls and others.

Andrew Goodwin and Carol Vernallis - Theory

Andrew Goodwin wrote a book called 'Dancing in the Distraction Factory'.
He also argues that pop videos can be categorised in 3 ways:

Illustration:

- Music : Always cuts on the beat
- Lyrics : Images illustrate the literal meaning or feeling of the lyrics, often just with the band singing and dancing.
- Band Image : The band siging, dancing, playing instruments and also dressed in clothes what suit their genre.

A good example of a music video that uses this type of illustration editing is Alicia Keys vide try sleeping with a broken heart. We see her displaying her feelings strongly all the way through out the music video. These emotions that she uses relate to the lyrics in the song. When looking at her we can see that she is in pain and she is broken hearted.

Amplification:

- Music : Shot cuts on the beat but also off the beat to empathise features of the music.
- Lyrics : Images amplify the lyrics. A specific narative may be used that would not necessarily be picked up from reading the lyrics alone.
- Band Image : The band take on fictional roles in the narrative.
Scouting for Girls - 'This aint a love song'. This is amplification because it is more, they go deeper with the meaning of the lyrics. The main singer is playing part of the 'fiction' in the video and he is acting parts of the lyrics because he don't meet up with anyone at the end so this could be saying 'Goodbye'.

Disjunctive:

- Music : Music cuts off the beat, sometimes (but not always) the sign of a badly made music video.
- Lyrics : Images which do not relate to the lyrics are used, sometimes used by bands who are already well established who can afford to take the risk to produce a video like this.
- Band Image : The band will take on the image that is nothing like or the complete opposite of their expected image. e.g. lead singer of 'Texas' dressed up as Elvis.

When starting a new boyband you would not take the risk to make a video like this using disjuncture as they are not well established, it wouldn't look right and also you want to make money.

Bordwell & Thompson's Theory (2001)

Bordwell and Thompson are 2 theorists that come up with their 4 corners theory in 2001. In their theory there are 4 different sections; Graphic, Rhythmic, Spatial & Temporal.

Graphic

This editing is all about the mise-en-scene, what we are shown on the screen thinking about the pictorial qualities within a video.

- Patterns, light and dark, colour similarities and differences.
- Can be used to create 'smooth continuity' or abrupt contrast.
- Graphic match - shots link together.
- Graphic continuity - Point of interest stay
the same throughout cuts.
- Graphic discontinuity - Everything keeps on changes, plays around with juxtaposition.

Rhythmic

Editing the footage and thinking about the duration of each shot. Rhythmic editing will show that each shot cuts on length according to the beat and tempo of the music. Different shots will give different effects.
- All shots same length
- Some which lengthen steadily
- Shots which get shorter and shorter in length
- Longer shots
- Rapid series of quick shots

Spatial

Basically, maintaining continuity through thinking about the space where the event of the music video takes place.
- Continuity - Using an establishing shot (where taken

THIS IS A ESTABLISHING SHOT OF NEW YORK FROM JAY Z AND ALICIA KEYS SONG EMPIRE STATE OF MIND.
place)
- The 'kuleshov effect' - no establishing shot but it still tells the audience where the location is.
- Cross cutting (parallel editing) acting taking place at the same time but at in different locations.
IN THE PICTURE BELOW YOU CAN SEE A CROSS CUT OF THE SAME PERSON BUT IN TWO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS.

Temporal - The unfolding of time

This is all about continuity and based on the time that the action is taken in and how the video footage manipulates time.
Order - order of events can be manipulated = the story/plot change to interrupt the normal order of time. (Flashbacks must then change to flash forward)
Duration - The events that take place can be altered through use of ellipsis
Frequency - In continuity editing - and event happening tends to only occur once. If the event is repeated it can become a powerful way of building tension and audience expectation.
